Distinguish a nominal 50K label, permitted loss distance and remaining headroom. Work through a moving-floor example before choosing an account. By PropFirmora · Published November 2, 2026 · Source-based educational analysis A “50K” account label does not mean you can lose $50,000. The loss rule and current floor determine the usable loss headroom, and that headroom can change while the nominal label stays the same. Three numbers, three different meanings Nominal size: the program's account label or starting reference. Loss distance: the specified distance used to establish or trail a floor. Remaining headroom: the current relevant balance or equity minus the current breach floor. Our reviewed Topstep, Apex EOD, MFFU Rapid and Tradeify Growth 50K configurations each list a $2,000 evaluation loss distance. That is 4% of the nominal $50,000 label. It does not make their funded rules equivalent. Worked example: the label stays, headroom shrinks In a hypothetical EOD account starting at $50,000 with a $2,000 trailing distance, the initial floor is $48,000. An eligible end-of-day high of $51,000 would move an unlocked floor to $49,000. If the balance later falls to $50,200, only $1,200 separates it from that floor. The account can still be called 50K. This example omits lock thresholds, commissions and position-level rules. It illustrates arithmetic, not the contract for a specific firm. Intraday high-water marks can move the floor at a different time, and EOD recalculation can still have real-time breach enforcement. Position limits are another constraint A contract cap is a maximum allowed position, not a suggestion to use it. A daily loss rule can stop trading before the total-loss floor is reached. Scaling rules may also restrict the funded stage even when the evaluation advertised a higher cap. A zero-based funded balance is not necessarily zero headroom Topstep's reviewed 50K XFA begins at displayed $0 with a −$2,000 floor. It has $2,000 initial distance under that rule, while the floor eventually locks at $0. Compare the difference between balance and floor rather than assuming that two dashboards must show the same nominal balance. What to compare before choosing a size Find the exact stage's floor, update timing and lock threshold. Check whether unrealized equity, closed balance or both affect it. Subtract the current floor from the relevant account value. Check daily limits and contract scaling separately. Compare all fees without treating a larger label as more withdrawable capital.
